Here’s a random update on what’s happening at Raymond Phang Photography today. Raymond and Ben are out shooting since morning, will be back later for a break before continuing the next session till past 11pm. They’re both dressed in sleek black formal attire, so they look something like this now;

RayBen the Men in Black. Minus the watches, the hair for Raymond, the white shirts inside, and the tie. -_-”

Susu’s ears are feasting on loud music with her earphones plugged in, and her eyes are feasting on photo editing.

I became a chef and prepared lunch for the RayBen and text them the menu;

Anyway, here’s a quick update on one of our conceptualised pre-wedding series. We actually shot this last year in August, and we still have quite a number of backlogs which we haven’t got the time to share.

This is a Poker card game themed concept photo shoot, shot on a rainy day in Singapore.

Diamond – It works everytime. “Queen of Gambler” showed hand for this round and the “Saint of Gambler” won the game with the Diamond 3 card in hand. It’s also actually an intended pun. Kekeke. Diamond is a girl’s best friend, and for this case the Diamond happens to be a guy’s best friend too!

Disclaimer: No pocket was burnt in the process of the photoshoot and gambling as a vice activity is strongly discouraged.

Special thanks to Deming for helping out at the photoshoot, throwing poker cards, throwing “money”, playing the role of the Croupier plus right hand man, and carrying the props! Raymond, Ben,  myself and Susu enjoyed this session, especially when we have such a dedicated and committed couple! Cheryl (“Queen of Gambler”) is an awesome help and she is extremely capable! Tony (“Saint of Gambler”) was super funny and very good in creating the mood for the shoot. Hahahahaha!!  We’re really thankful for their trust and co-operation, and most of all for appreciating our photography work!

Awfully Raymondlate. HAHAHA~ Actually it’s a post-it note with Raymond’s name on the box and I stuck it to cover the Chocolate word.

There you go! Damn awesome damn chocolatey chocolate cake!!

And there’s a Thank You note as well… Hehehe…. As usual, the cake monster finished most of it at one go.

And here’s a long overdue update on Raymond Phang’s recent achievement on winning the third place for the WPPI 2011 Second half online competition for the Bride and Groom Together wedding category. This image of the couple with the star trails was taken in New Zealand last year in April. Everytime when I see this image, it never fails to bring back fond memories. Shooting in New Zealand was awesome! Although the weather was a little chilly and the wind was super strong, we had a lot of fun! It just feel so relaxed in New Zealand as compared to shooting a conceptualised pre-wedding in Singapore.

We will be visiting the beautiful country again this year in April, and we are currently left with 1 last slot for our Botaks Combo (super affordable package for local actual day + conceptualised pre-wedding in new zealand + casual bridal in new zealand). Feedback welcome on this set of images. This is the first time im trying a rangefinder so please be gentle! Most of the shots are taken at waist level without focusing thru the rangefinder with a rough gague of the distance. The m9p makes me feel like a photographer again! Haha!

The next photography contest that Raymond Phang entered was the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) Fall 2011 contest. We received seven placings in different categories, and was placed third in the Top 20 Overall winners of the Fall 2011 Wedding Photography Contest.

Same with blogging and replying emails or anything that requires the use of typing/writing alphabets, I need to think and let my brain wander, so I need a quiet place. My Boss was on the phone just now and I almost wanted to slap him cos he spoke so loudly I had to migrate my workstation to another room. OOOPS! Hahahahahaha~! I don’t know if that counts as a pet peeve, but well, that’s mine.

Back to topic, today I’m sharing on our mini wedding photography contest report card! It’s just like the good old school days where we have tests and assessments, mid-year exams, final year exams etc. There’s a report card with all the results to our test subjects and also comments from the teacher. It’s my most feared time of the year and I often had dreams of regretting not studying hard enough for exams and end up failing. I still have that kind of dreams even until today. But anyway, our report card for the final year looks pretty good, and it’s all thanks to our dearest Susu for putting in so much hard work in all the images until she had to blast loud emo songs in the office to make her feel better, dearest Ben for assisting so diligently in all the conceptualised pre-wedding and Actual Day shoots even during his off days, and dearest Raymond for his eyes and brains and perserverance in never giving up in his belief which got us where we are today.

Of course there’s somebody else which we need to thank… OUR DEAREST COUPLES!

You know whenever I look at our conceptualised pre-wedding images, I’ll think of how much effort our couples have put in for the shoot. I’m honestly really, really, really touched by the amount of time they put in for the shoot, how serious and committed they are, how accommodating and how much trust they put into our photography. Every single one of you are all super amazing, and I am uber uber uber uber proud of you guys… really, not everyone can be like you, willing to sacrifice so much for the shoot. I am thankful to have met you guys, work together with you guys, and I cherish this relationship a lot. There’s only a handful of you, which is good too! I will never forget the times we spent together, meeting up for discussions, liaising via email, whatsapping thru and fro on locations and props, makan sessions, drinking sessions, how we got caught in the rain during the shoots, etc etc.

Just like how God knows each and every star in the universe by name, this is also how I’ll remember each and everyone of you for a long, long time, for I am deeply touched by you. :)

Anyway, here are the results from one of the photography contest we entered – The International Loupe Awards 2011;

We had a Silver Award for the Landscape category. Raymond shot this during his Russia trip sponsored by Intel where he travelled to the edge of space. For those interested in his Russia trip and the Intel contest, you can read about it here;

Silver Award in the Wedding Category for this iconic Zouk image featuring Eddie and Aileen. This image was also placed 16th in the overall top 50 of the Award. Special thanks to the management, to Dominic, Joy, Majella and Susu for assisting too! :)

Bronze Award in Wedding Category, featuring the Land Rover, TP and Eileen. Special thanks to TP’s daddy for driving and positioning this baby into the muddy area, and for washing the car after the shoot even though it’s already past midnight. Thank you Ben for assisting too!

Silver Award in the Wedding Category featuring Lokie and Lydia with the upside down “Love”, or the upside down Super Mario plant. Hahahahaha! Thanks to Dominic and Susu for assisting in the cold weather with growling stomachs!

Bronze Award in the Wedding Category, with Shuqin laying on the steps of the staircase like a sleeping beauty. Special thanks to Mia and Clarabelle, and Susu for assisting!

Bronze Award in the wedding category with the sexy GTR… Kekekekeke~ Many thanks for the folks at the car workshop for allowing us to use the premises for the shoot even though it’s already past your working hour and you guys had to rush off for an appointment, and also Susu for assisting!

Bronze Award, wedding category with the food fight image! Of course we have to thank Susu and the domestic helper for throwing the food, and also to the helper for cleaning up the massive mess afterwards. Imagine having to pick up all the splattered chillis, spaghettis etc, and not forgetting she had to clean the ceiling too. :)

Bronze Award for the wedding category, featuring Private and Confidential! Steamboat in the middle of the road… Woohooooo! And yes it was raining when we shot this scene. Thank you to all Private and Confidential’s khakis for helping out in the rain!!!

The second contest in our mini wedding photography contest report card series is the Professional Photographers of America’s Summer Shootout 2011 contest.

This serene and beautiful image of Shuqin won the First Place in the PPA’s Summer Shootout 2011 contest.

I’ll be sharing more on the report cards for the remaining of this week, with results from the Master Photographers Association grading and competition, and also the ISPWP (International Society of Professional Wedding Photographers) contest results, followed by a promo at the end of this week in celebration of the acceptable results.

To us the results from the contests is like a report card where the “examiners” look through and grade our works. It reflects the efforts all of us at Raymond Phang Photography and our couples have put in, and just like a kid if we didn’t fare as good as expected, we’ll work even harder next time after looking at the areas where we need to work on. If the results are acceptable, we’ll just give ourselves a pat on the back and continue to slog for our couples. Hahaha. Well, Life is a journey of constant learning, and hopefully we’ll improve and produce something spectacular for everyone in the coming new year. Cheers!

Local photographer into finals of major Photo Awards

Singapore based photographer, Raymond Phang has won 10 merit prizes in a major international photography awards.
Raymond Phang’s image is now in the finals of the forthcoming Master Photographer of the Year Awards 2011. The Awards are run by The Master Photographers Association (MPA), the UK’s most respected organisation for professional photographers.
Raymond Phang now goes forward to the final judging and faces a nervous few weeks while he waits until the Awards Ceremony in October when the overall winners will be announced. The Master Photography Awards 2011 presentations ceremony will be held at the Gateshead Hilton in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne on Sunday 9 October.

MPA Chief executive, Colin Buck made this comment on Raymond Phang’s achievement: “It is exciting to reach the Merit award stage of judging as Raymond Phang was in competition with the very best photographers in the world. There were over 2,500 images submitted this year so to be awarded a Merit prize is a real success, well done to Raymond Phang, and good luck in the final!”

We actually got news of the Merit achievement (score of 80 points and above) in August, but was too caught up with photoshoots and editing to share it with you guys.  The 10 merits goes to categories such as the Overseas Classical Wedding, Overseas Contemporary Wedding, Open Licentiate, Landscape & Travel, David Facey Award (most original image), and the Dennis Hylander Wedding Award, and they all made it to the final round of judging which will be taking place in October.

We also recently gotten news that we have achieved 10^th, 12^th and 13^th place for the AG | WPJA Q2 2011 contest with the following images;

Judges Comment: I really like the lighting and color in this image. It’s bizarre enough to be interesting. It’s technically strong enough to be attractive. It’s composition is inviting. All in all, it’s a fun portrait with a lot of photographic and informational strengths.

Judges Comment: What an ironic contrast. Those lovely warm pink pastels are offset by the bride’s threatening posture – her bow at the ready – as punishment seems to draw near. And then, add to this crazy mix the lighting and filtering used to make the image.  It’s harsh enough to create hard shadows on those soft curtains but soft enough to subdue some of the details. Overall, it’s an interesting image that makes us want to know more.

Judges Comment: The HDR style of this image was a great choice for the industrial props and backdrop. What’s not to like about an image that is beautifully lit and visually rich in tone, color and detail?

Judges Comment: This images goes beyond use of technique for its own sake. There is real content and a connection with the people at the center of this event.

Judges Comment: A very odd setup (not to mention the rather unusual jacket the groom is wearing). The parking lot is a striking and stimulating contrast to the bride’s formal gown, as are the outfits of the others in the photo, but everyone seems to be enjoying their participation in the picture, which in turn invites us to smile along with them.

All these achievement doesn’t come with monetary gain, but the achievement far outweigh any monetary benefits. Cos it’s more of a personal motivation for the team at Raymond Phang Photography, a pat on the back for the effort and a job well done. A big thank you to all our couples, friends and family for believing in us.

For now, let’s focus on the AD images!

They are super duper well prepared. A OUB ONG UNITED BANK Cheque……………… Pay to Sisters……….. Singapore dollars $888,888… But I think the cheque got rejected… cos the numerical numbers and the spelling doesnt match. Should be eight hundred + eighty eight thousand and eight hundred + eighty eight dollars.. minus the “+” sign… right? :p

And here’s the princess getting ready…

So with the bounced cheque, brothers had no choice but to dance and perform for everyone. I like the first image at the top cos best man looks like he’s doubting groom’s ability… don’t know can dance or not…. and groom was wearing a smirk on his face. Dance till pro pro hor li si!! Muwahahahaha! Must have looked good with Loud! Productions’ skills…

Next he was tested on his sewing skills. He sewed the word 爱 which means ‘Love’ in Chinese. Success!

KW: “WHAT?? U mean my cheque bounced?? How can it be?? I am so angry!”

Brothers: “Chill bro, chill… come, drink water first… I think the horse leg is revealed, bo bian lah, we have to use the Yusof Ishaks already…”

Oh if you love Shuqin’s gown, it’s from The Wedding Present.

I think I like this series a lot because there were a lot of shy shy and cute moments like this… you know, like those kind of traditional older days where newly weds super shy on their wedding day, tease bit bit will blush like mad. LOL!

Touch ups and preparation to the Solemnisation ceremony at the Glass Pavillion – Amara Sanctuary Sentosa.

A lot of brides love the glass pavillion cos It’s pretty princessy and cosy. Luckily the weather was kind to them with a not so sunny afternoon.

They had Professor Yu Shi Ming as their Justice of Peace (JP), who also happens to be one of the more popular ones our couples usually engage for their solemnisation.

That’s a before and after image. Before the vows and rings exchange, and after.

Another one of my favourite image, and I just cannot explain why…

One of my favourite tea ceremony sets (yeah, I have favourites from tea ceremony too)..

After they were done with the solemnisationa and tea ceremony, evening part was back at Amara Sanctuary Ballroom. Sky was raining a bit during the evening, but all was good!

Boy boy seriously looking through the pre-wedding album, so young start to look for wedding photographer already. LOL!!

Usually we do not do the formal group photos, but here’s one specially to thank Mia and Clarabelle for their help at Kangwei & Shuqin’s pre-wedding shoot earlier on.

Ta-Dah!

The couple engaged a three piece band from A Little Dream, with Bevlyn Khoo the femal vocal, Zhengquan the male vocal and Ein Ein on the keyboard. They were hitting numbers like La Isla Bonita (too bad no dance floor for the guests to shake their bons bons and swing their heads), Dream a little dream, Quando Quando Quando, and also several Chinese pieces

And then it’s a bit of mingling with the scary guests while waiting for second march in. Proud mummy showing off her daughter to the guests, and poor daughter had to drink and drink and drink. Kangwei had to help her fend off the leeches. Muwahahahaha~ :p

Here comes the second march in!

Best man Chak’s speech and Maid of Honour Angie’s speech which touched the couple.

Next on was the couple’s speech which had the guests exploded in laughter. Epic nugget of information on that day from Angie which goes something along the line of this;

One day Kangwei suddenly looked at Shuqin with loving eyes, touched her hair gently, like so romantic and told Shuqin this – Dear you complete me, because for the things I don’t like to do, you’ll do them for me.

*FAINTS*! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Moving on, more drinking action at the tables. Big sister big says STOP, we kiss, we don’t drink. So the kissing had to go on for as long as the yam seng was on. LOL!

Shuqin’s mummy also did a good job making sure the the friends and relatives are well taken care of, she also drink drank drunk, just like the couple.

More drinking action……….. -_-”…. Why not have an ice cream eating action…. :p

Ah ma also wants a piece of the action but don’t have. :p

Leap of Faith – Our couple actually did a cross dressed thematic shoot for their pre-wedding. It was a known fact that the groom rarely had pictures of him taken.. he doesn’t like it somehow.. but I think it must be the power of love, he actually agreed to do a conceptualised pre-wedding shoot with us. Imagine a person dislike having pictures of him taken, yet agree to spend a full day accommodating to our requests for the photoshoot!!! We were so touched and honoured because the groom was really super co-operative! And he must have love the bride so much to agree. SALUTE for Private and Confidential!!

Love – One of the romantic series from Amy and Roy’s conceptualised pre-wedding shoot at the Museum. It’s kinda hard for us to do romantic cos we need to like… feel a triple dosage of love until we get soooo inspired to do a romantic one. But it turned out well, pretty classic. :)

Celebration – Same couple as the “Love” piece, they had a shoot done on the Sundown marathon day itself. This was sort of a one shot one kill image, and we had to clean up the floor after that. Slippery floor will pose as a hazard for other runners coming in right after, especially when this is the finishing line where the runners will usually chiong their way in.

Shiok Shiok Curry Pok – Conceptualised pre-wedding in New Zealand, South Island. Super love this farm… not a very big farm, but I love it for the beautiful friendship/relationship between the animals, how they were able to co-exist together in harmony. I’ve never seen pigs, horses and sheeps “playing” together, and I’ve never witnessed on live how piggy can sneak out for a little tour and came back through the same hole he sneaked out from! It’s like watching Animal farm or Babe the movie!

Goose Bumps – Conceptualised Pre-Wedding in PRAGUE, at the Prague castle! Woohoo! Prague is quite a romantic place, and we’d love to go back there if not for the crowd. I think it’ll be beautiful to go during the cold winter season, but be prepared to freeze like hell. We were already freezing when we went there for the shoot in April. Again, gained weight like hell cos we couldn’t resist the good food. All the joggings from the ups and downs to carry lights and equipments didn’t help at all. Grrr… This is from the romantic series, more crazy ones to come from the Prague shoot!!

I don’t give a fart – Conceptualised pre-wedding shoot at Sepang Circuit (KL). Subang was a damn awesome place with awesome good food!! We flew there on FireFly airline, the propellor plane was suuuuuuupeeeerrrrrrrr awesomeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! The G-force was so shiok, service was fantastic, crew was friendly and we’d love to fly with Firefly again!! The food there was yummy, black noodle was so yummy with the black sauce, the fried rice, the bak kut teh, the steamed beancurd buried below the rice, the planta prata, the bandung was super shiok and we gained weight from the trip. Can’t help it when our couple was such a good host!!

There’s many more to come from the conceptualised pre-wedding shoots! Recently we’ve been receiving quite a number of enquiries from couples to do conceptualised pre-wedding with us, and it’s on rare occurrence we get super loony couples who are riding on the same wave as us to do things crazy enough. We get a lot of crazy ideas in our brain, especially when we don’t get good sleep and we keep having dreams about weird stuffs.
